Birmingham leading on home insulation
Birmingham is leading the way in improving the energy efficiency of homes, according to government figures.
Statistics showing the number of homes insulated through the carbon emissions reduction target put Birmingham at the top of the table, with 12,079 installations between April 2010 and March 2011.
Leeds and Bradford also do well, with 11,244 installations and 9,078 installations respectively, while Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, and Hackney come near the bottom of the list.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change said some local authorities may perform badly because homes in their area are not suited to standard types of insulation, or because there are not many homes that require the work to be carried out.
The carbon emissions reduction target requires large energy companies to reduce emissions by improving home energy efficiency.
Energy secretary Chris Huhne said: ‘With energy prices ramping up people want to know how they can keep their bills down. As well as shopping around for the best energy deal, insulating your home can also save you money straight away.
‘We’ve told energy companies to do far more to help consumers cut their bills and while these figures show a mixed picture across Britain, they also show that millions of homes are already benefiting.’
