A Scottish firm, Smart Metering Systems, has won a contract with the energy giant, E.ON, to provide gas meters.
The deal which will last the lifetime of the meters – about 25 years – covers both domestic and business customers.
The Glasgow-based firm is hoping to take advantage of a drive to fit every UK home with a smart meter by 2020.
SMS said it was delighted that E.ON had decided to partner with it.
Alan Foy, CEO of SMS, added: “This contract represents further penetration of the major UK energy suppliers and is another step towards our stated aim of becoming market leader in the independent ownership of meters assets.”
Smart meters are devices designed to show suppliers and customers exactly how much gas and electricity is being used.
