About 40 homes were evacuated after the blast in Gairloch Avenue on the Lakes Estates in Bletchley at about 05:20 GMT on Tuesday.
Buckinghamshire Fire Service said there had not been a fire but officers remained at the site overnight due to the risk of a blaze.
Gas engineers have worked all night to identify and isolate the leak.
Residents were taken to the Sycamore Hall in Drayton Road and looked after by the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency service volunteers.
