Minimise risks of fires, explosions, and energy-releasing events with DSEAR Compliance.

What is DSEAR?

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) is a UK regulation designed to protect people and property from risks associated with fires, explosions, and other hazardous events. These regulations were amended in June 2015 to include gas pipework installations. DSEAR is a mandatory requirement for a wide range of settings, including social housing, workplaces and commercial sites.

Who Needs to Comply with DSEAR?

DSEAR is not limited to industrial or commercial settings; it’s essential for anyone responsible for public safety, including employers and social housing providers. If you’re a duty holder, consider these critical questions:

1. Could a fire or explosion in your setting pose a risk to anyone, including employees, tenants, or the public?

2. Is there gas pipework in areas where employees, subcontractors, or the public have access to, such as communal kitchens, corridors, bulk meter rooms or boiler plantrooms?

If you answer ‘yes’ to both questions, a DSEAR assessment is required.

Note: Generic site risk assessments are not substitutes for DSEAR  assessments.

Competency Requirements for DSEAR Assessors

The DSEAR assessor must be competent, equipped with the necessary education, skills, and experience in areas like pipework design, ventilation, and industry legislation.

Key Factors in DSEAR Assessments

A comprehensive DSEAR assessment examines:

– Pipework routing

– Jointing methods

– Ventilation systems

– Maintenance protocols

Frequency of DSEAR Assessments

The need for re-assessment depends on the risks identified. If issues are found, more frequent reviews may be advised.
