Press Release: Theft of Gas and Mallowdale Avenue Tragedy

CORGI Technical Services Responds to Mallowdale Avenue Tragedy with Urgent Call for Safe Energy Practices and Support for Those Struggling with Bills

15 January 2024

In the wake of the tragic incident on Mallowdale Avenue, CORGI Technical Services, a leader in gas safety and compliance, is urgently calling for public awareness about the dangers of energy theft and the importance of seeking help if struggling to pay energy bills.

The Mallowdale Avenue tragedy, which involved a catastrophic event linked to gas theft, serves as a stark reminder of the lethal risks associated with tampering with energy supplies. This incident has brought to light the broader issue of fuel poverty and the desperate measures some individuals may consider.

Matt Sharp, CEO of CORGI Technical Services, expressed his deep condolences: “The Mallowdale Avenue tragedy is a harrowing event that has affected us all. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to everyone impacted. This tragedy brings to the forefront the critical issue of fuel poverty and the dangerous lengths some are driven to. I urge anyone struggling to pay their energy bills to seek help through the proper channels. Your safety, and that of your community, is of utmost importance.”

CORGI Technical Services strongly advises those facing difficulties with energy bills to contact their energy supplier to discuss ways to manage their payments. Suppliers are obliged to assist and negotiate a solution that is feasible for both parties. Ignoring the issue could lead to severe consequences, including the risk of disconnection.

For those unable to afford their bills, there are several steps that can be taken:

Negotiate a Payment Plan: Contact your supplier to arrange paying off debts in instalments. This plan should be affordable and consider your current energy usage alongside what you owe.
Seek a Repayment Pause: If you’re facing temporary financial hardship, ask your supplier to pause repayments. They are not obligated to agree, but they must at least consider your request.
Fuel Direct Scheme: If you’re receiving certain benefits, you may be eligible for the Fuel Direct Scheme, where a fixed amount is automatically deducted from your benefits to cover your energy debts.
Energy Grants: Check if you’re eligible for grants from your energy supplier or organisations like the British Gas Energy Trust, which can help pay off your energy debts.
Speak to your Housing Provider: Social Housing residents should speak to their housing provider about what support is available to them. Most housing associations and councils will have resources in place to provide guidance or signpost those struggling to agencies who can help further.
Advice and Support: For further guidance, contact organisations like the Citizens Advice Bureau for comprehensive advice on managing energy debts and bills.

Be Aware and Report Concerns: It’s important to be aware that energy theft is a crime which carries serious penalties, as well as posing significant safety risks. Householders should be wary of anyone suggesting they could save you money on fuel bills, including cold callers who claim to be from a reputable company. Anyone who has concerns has the option to report suspected energy theft anonymously either to their landlord where relevant, or directly to Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 023 2777 or online at www.stayenergysafe.co.uk.

If you smell or suspect a gas leak you should call the National Gas Emergency Service number on 0800 111 999 as quickly as possible.

CORGI Technical Services remains committed to ensuring gas safety and supporting those in need during these challenging times. The company continues to work with industry partners and regulatory bodies to raise awareness and prevent such tragedies.
